Young Learner Resources
In this dedicated life skills section, you'll find age-appropriate resources to cover basic life skills essential for young children, from working in a team to understanding different cultures.
Featuring exclusive materials from the latest Macmillan Education primary courses, each topic includes a downloadable 'I can... Can you?' activity card and a full lesson plan to use in class.
Cultural Awareness - Part Two
Fostering cultural awareness in children builds an understanding early on about the importance of diversity and what it means to be a global citizen. These Story Central activities and lessons will build on students’ existing knowledge of different languages and cultures through the use of interactive activities.
Numeracy
Numeracy is a life skill as well as an academic one. You need it to function day to day to support cross-curricular activities and to develop the logical part of the mind.
Communication: Description
Communication is the ability to be able to articulate thoughts and feeling accurately, which is key to a young learner’s development. From being able to ask for directions or instructions, to discussing emotions, communication skills will help young learners develop a rounded and practical English vocabulary.
Independence
From learning to complete classroom tasks on their own, to understanding the importance of responsibilities and making decisions, helping children to develop a sense of independence is essential preparation for adulthood.
Cultural Awareness
Fostering cultural awareness in children builds an understanding early on about the importance of diversity and what it means to be a global citizen. Through the course Macmillan Next Move, children develop cross-cultural awareness with lessons that bring real aspects of the world alive, developing language skills in a realistic context.
Problem Solving
Through the use of activities such as puzzles, teachers help young learners to foster their problem solving skills, encouraging them to think imaginatively and develop their analytical skills as they learn to distinguish between different solutions.
Communication: Past Tense
Talking and listening to each other are important skills to teach children from an early age. Whilst not the easiest thing to teach, grammar is a central part of effective communication.
Citizenship
Educating children about the importance of taking responsibility in their local and wider communities prepares them to be good citizens and helps them to make informed decisions. In these activities, children learn how to give directions, explore their local surroundings and find out more about their natural environment.
Creativity: Stories
Stories are a great resource in encouraging a child's natural creativity as part of their language and literacy development. Through creative storytelling, children develop their imagination, self-expression and open themselves to new ideas.
Collaboration
Teamwork is an essential skill in a child's ongoing development. Children who cooperate and participate in collaborative activities develop a greater sense of social competency as well as self-confidence. Including a full lesson and song, these activities encourage children to work together in a fun and lively way.
Eating Healthily
Teaching children the importance of a balanced diet and healthy eating is essential for their growth, development, and even improving their concentration in class. By developing healthy eating habits during their early years, children establish good behaviours which can affect their dietary patterns as adults.
