Sharing is Learning - Producing ‘Confident Communicators’ inside and outside our English classrooms - Derek Spafford

To succeed in their lives young adults need to have effective communication skills and strategies which will make them confident communicators in English. Likewise, teachers need the skills to provide support and techniques to prepare learners for their future lives and not just getting them a pass in an English exam. Foreign-language teachers often comment that learners just don’t want to speak or are afraid of making mistakes. Other times learners are just not prepared when asked to speak or they are uncertain of what to say and how to say it, especially at lower levels.
This session will look at how cooperative learning unit openers and dedicated speaking lessons can develop ‘confident communicators’ by providing scaffolding techniques for effective communication and also increase the confidence of our learners in a variety of situations.
