Macmillan Education, International House London and International House World Organisation are proud to announce the winner of the 2024 Simon Greenall Award. This award celebrates the life and work of Simon Greenall, OBE — teacher, trainer, materials writer, and President of IATEFL. It supports projects that build communities through learning English by offering mentoring, publicity, promotion, and a grant.

Happy Teachers - Venice Irving

We chose Happy Teachers because their programme reaches across continents to link experienced teachers in Jamaica with new teachers in Tanzania. - Jill Florent SGA Committee Member .

Happy Teachers offers six months of coaching to help new teachers improve their teaching and develop their careers.

Meet the Street (English in Nice)

A programme based in Nice that enables English learners and local entrepreneurs and startups to meet and engage in English. Simon Greenall Award committee member Lucy Horsefield says: “This is a great idea, and I’m pleased to discuss with Claire ways to develop it into a sustainable project.”

Effective Collaboration

A partnership linking a class in Konosu City, Japan, with a class in Sabah, North Borneo, Malaysia. The children meet online and speak in English. Each teacher receives a copy of 500 Activities for the Primary Classroom by Carol Read. Carol says, “Congratulations… I’m sure that your classes will benefit enormously from having this authentic, intercultural learning experience at such a young age.” Learn more about this project here. 

UG Voices Choir

Based in Brisbane, Australia, this community choir builds lasting connections while enhancing English language development for overseas students through choral rehearsal and performance. Listen to the choir sing here.

Previous Winner

The previous award winner was the Dau Dau Project, run by Sirhajwan Idek and Nurazilah Othman of Keningau College in Sabah, Borneo, Malaysia. Their work uses folk tales to bring together different peoples of Malaysia, promoting understanding through storytelling, dance, puppetry, theatre, and songs. Learn more here: *click*
